Project Reflection
Model United Nations is a simulation in which participants follow the procedures of a real United Nations Meeting. The purpose of the United Nations is to create and maintain international order. The way a meeting functions, is by hosting delegates of different countries to debate global issues. They all express their concerns, amend resolutions and vote on such resolutions. During the meeting, you can only speak in the third person and you have to say certain phrases if you would like to do something. For example, point of inquiry means that you have a question. My roll in the MUN was to be the delegate of the Philippines. The topic that we had to debate for was climate change. I gave a speech where I talked about the effects climate change has on the Philippines. I talked about a resolution that a student made that would help my country adapt to climate change and encouraged others to vote for that resolution. After hearing many other speeches, it was time to vote for a resolution. The resolution that the delegate of the Islamic Republic of Iran made was the one I wanted people to vote for. All votes were counted and that resolution passed. I enjoyed this experience because it was very hands on and it was a real world situation.
I strengthened my skills during the research process of this project. I really looked into the sources I was using because I didn’t want to use false information on a topic that we were going to present to an audience. If I needed to research a question, I read through the various search results to see if they all had similar answers. During the MUN meeting, I had the courage to give a speech. Going up in front of an audience whether it's big or small is not something I like doing but I did in this project. That was one way I stretched myself and it's something I’m very proud of. I was challenged at the beginning of this project because I didn’t understand how the meetings functioned. It was also hard for me to adapt to the proper language we had to use. I addressed these challenges by studying the papers that the teacher gave us. Even with the papers that were handed to us, I was still not able to fully understand how the meetings functioned. Unfortunately, I did not ask any questions about it so it was hard for me to follow along when we had our real meeting. For our next project, I would not like to repeat this mistake. Instead, I plan on asking questions and talking to the teacher.
This project made me more aware of global issues. I never saw climate change as a big threat until we studied this topic. One thing I liked was how we didn’t just look into the problems that America has, we look at problems that other countries around the world have. This made me realize that there are countries that have big threats but don't get enough attention to mitigate such threats. There is huge web when we look at the problems climate change is causing. The earth overheats, ice melts, animals lose their habitats, sea levels rise, land floods, cropping fields are destroyed, people starve, people migrate, the earth overpopulates, and so on. At this point, I was convinced that climate change is real. All these problems will occur if we don't decrease our carbon dioxide emissions. We need to save our home known as earth.
