For my passion project, I decided to create care packages for the homeless and their dogs. We got in contact with Done Deal Retail store and they donated blankets. Creature comforts donated little sample bags of dog food. We also got jackets that the Animas High School lost and found donated. We still needed more things like food, water, hygiene care products, and dog toys. My partner and I decided to make a bake sale so we could raise money to buy those items. Once we had everything together, we went out to the shelter and distributed our care packages. I decided to choose this as my passion project because I have a deep need to help those that struggle. It's really upsetting to me when you see a homeless person out on the streets asking for help but they just get ignored. It was also sad to see the skinny dogs walking along by their sides. With this project, I was able to help them out a little. I know that it wasn’t a big act but I was able to crack out quite a few smiles. The dogs were definitely excited about their new toys. In the end, it made me feel really good about myself.
One thing that was challenging for me was creating the final product. The original plan was to create a professional video but in the end, it turned into a slideshow. The problem was scheduling and time. It was hard for my partner and I to find a day to in which we could go out and give our care packages to the homeless. The only day that worked was the last week that we had to work on this project. We didn’t have a full week, it was just three days. We used one day to go out and give and we spent the last two days trying to upload our pictures and videos. I decided to work on the slideshow since it would take up less time because all you had to do was upload the pictures and videos. I was still set on creating a video so I kept on going back and forth trying to complete both. The slideshow was a backup in case the video didn’t get done in time. I think that we would have got the video done if we went out to give earlier on in this unit.
I would like to continue my passion project by assembling care packages and having them in my parent's cars. Whenever I’m out and I see a homeless person, I will be able to hand them one of these care packages. It would be a lot a money to go out and buy a bunch of items for the homeless so what I plan on doing is collecting items around my house. I could also ask my friends for things they don't use. For example, I could ask them to give me the food they don’t eat, clothes they don’t use, or dog items that they don’t use anymore. I would like to do this for the same reason that I chose to do this as my passion project. I feel really bad for those that are a lot less fortunate than the rest of us and most get ignored and don’t get the attention they need. Everyone is equal and we should all treat each other that way.
