A migrant is a person who temporarily leaves their homeland to find a job. Mexico has a high flow of single adults but a low on unaccompanied children and family members traveling together. There are other migrants that are coming from different countries with higher migration rates. Despite this, President Trump has been taking harsh approaches to detain the flow of migrants on the Mexican border.
Migrants that come from the Mexican borders come to the United States to obtain the opportunity to better their lives for themselves and their families. Most take on rigorous jobs that many Americans would not consider taking yet, they are subjected to discrimination and other injustices. For example, in Maryland, the Washington Post reported, “About a third of the state’s crab picking jobs were unfilled along the Eastern Shore last summer. As a result, crab companies could not meet customer demand and lost profit. As the average household income in the U.S. rises, there will be more disposable income, and more demand for hotels, restaurants, and construction.” (“Frazee, Gretchen). A lot of migrants take on these kinds of services and often the biggest misconception is that they don't pay taxes but they do. Unfortunately, President Trump has ordered to striped them from those jobs.
During World War Two, there was a demand for Mexican laborers as a void needed to be filled for laborers who were sent as troops. The Bracero Program invited Mexicans to temporarily work mostly in areas of agriculture. Working on farms created many health issues as they would work with pesticides and could get into many accidents working with hazardous tools. They had poor access to health care and did not receive enough help. They were filled with enough fear to not complain even when they faced injustices.
Today, President Trump has made it clear to the public his views on migrants amining mostly towards Mexicans. He has created an atmosphere where it is acceptable to increase racially profiling, border killings, and to treat migrants as scapegoats. They have become victims of racism and stereotyping and are being discriminated, things that add on to their stressful lifestyle. As Migrants did in the past, they keep silent as the fear upon them had dramatically increased. The American Civil Liberties Union reported, “ Numerous international human rights documents firmly establish the principle that adds no human being can be “illegal” or outside the protection of the law. Yet despite the clearly established principle that discrimination and abuse based on immigration status are violations of human rights, U.S. government policies continue to sanction human rights violations against migrants and immigrants." Even though these principles are established, our Presidents and people in power have failed to follow through with them.
In a deontologist’s point of view, we would all be responsible for treating everyone with respect since all are worthy of it. Human rights would be valued even those of migrants and we should no longer use people for our own benefit. We must act out of duty so our actions can be moral. This means that if we do the right action but for ulterior motives, our act is not moral. Our actions toward migrants must be respectful and done for the right motives as a deontologist would say. When migrants are treated with disrespect and their rights are violated, we should go through their cases with Aristotle’s veil of ignorance. Our minds automatically tend to judge people as soon as we see them and we feel a certain way towards them. Having a veil of ignorance would allow people to evaluate the case for just as it is without putting our own bias in it. We have failed to treat migrants respectfully in the past and we keep on failing to do so today. We must get past our pride and recognize our abilities to work together as a united country.
